Patrick Miguel G. Asayas, Pinoy Pilgrim Scholar

Pinoy Pilgrim Global Foundation Inc.’s (PPGFI) Scholar for Academic Year 2015-2016 is Patrick Miguel G. Asayas, an incoming 4th year Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering student at the University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P).

Miguel is the second of four siblings, all boys. His father is an OFW who works as a security officer in Macau, while his mother is a full-time housewife who takes care of the kids, all of them scholars and honor students in Southridge School since primary school, except for the youngest, a 10-year old, who studies in a school in Laguna. Their eldest brother, who graduated from UA&P in 2014 on a scholarship, is now employed at Accenture and is helping their parents support the family’s daily needs and the schooling needs of the younger children.

Like his older brother, Miguel’s honor standing enabled him to avail of a 100% tuition scholarship grant at UA&P, However, as a rule, this grant is reduced to 75% once a sibling availing of a similar scholarship graduates from the university. Given the family’s tight finances which did not make it possible to cover the 25% reduction in the scholarship grant, Miguel and his parents had only two viable options: seek a supplementary scholarship grant or transfer to another university.

Miguel and his family are very grateful for the decision of PPGFI to support his last two years in UA&P. Upon graduation, he plans to work in the Philippines to gain experience and eventually follow in the footsteps of his father, if the opportunity arises, to work abroad (he thinks Canada is a good place) as an engineer.
